10 Reasons Why You Should Start Your Own Business

Most adults, at some point in their lives, dream of “having their own business”. This is the American Dream, the vision of success, the epitome of accomplishment, the road to financial freedom. After all, the majority of self made millionaires in North America, made their fortunes by taking a leap of faith and grasping the gold ring for themselves.

It is a fact that a large majority of self made millionaires made their fortunes through home based businesses. (There are many articles and surveys available in the financial magazines and white papers to support this.) Most successful home based businesses are what is referred to as Network Marketing or Direct Sales.

Network Marketing is an admirable profession, even Donald Trump when asked what he would do if he lost all of his money, commented he would join a Network Marketing company and have his fortune back in no time. But the question is, why should You start a Home Based Business. Working from home is wonderful if you have the right “fit”, but you also should make sure that YOU are a Fit for a Home Business. Before you consider this as an option, let’s take a look at the reasons that drive most people to becoming an entrepreneur. This will assist you to identify any similarities in your own thinking. This is the first step to deciding if a Home Based Business is the right choice for you.

1 - More money, or as the professionals call it, Financial Independence

A new and better home, a new car, college education, travel, better lifestyle for your family… All of these things cost more and more every year, but they are the necessities of life. Then, why is it getting so hard for the average family to have and enjoy these things? Money, or should we say, the Lack of Money. This is the number one reason people begin a home based business. You might choose to just supplement your income with a couple extra thousand each month, or choose to go for the gold by leaving your job and replacing your income. Many entrepreneurs actually replace their yearly income every month. There is so much abundance in our world and each of us deserves to have as much abundance as we choose. The question you should ask yourself is “Am I making the amount of money I choose to make or am I making what my employer chooses to pay me?” Whatever your financial goals, a home based business just might be the answer. But, do you have the mindset to create your own wealth? If this is your driving force, there are many resources available to assist you in creating that mindset. Regardless of how hard you are willing to work to have your fortune, if you do not create the mindset, therefore working smarter, success will be a real challenge for you.

2 - Hate your job

If you can honestly say that you dread going to work, do not like the work you do and just stay on a job for the paycheck, you are certainly not alone. Do you spend your Sunday, worrying about Monday and the beginning of another week? Did you know that virtually 97% of working America is either unhappy or unsatisfied in their jobs? Our society, from the day we are born through college, teach us that you should get a good education and get a good job. What they do not teach us is that we “sell our time” in exchange for a paycheck. If you are unhappy in your job, this unhappiness has a direct affect on your health, your well being, your family and your future. If you are indeed very unhappy in your job, you should take a good look at your heart and decide if this is how you choose to live. It is a choice. You choose where to work, you choose how much money to make and you choose your environment. So, take some time to evaluate the environment you are in and if you should move on to a new environment..

3 - Overworked and Underpaid?

Ask yourself, “Am I really being paid what I am worth?” or better yet “Am I being paid what I deserve?” What do you deserve? It is the God given right of every human being to be prosperous. There is more than enough money in this world for everyone to earn as much as they choose. Why let someone else tell you how much you are worth and what your family deserves? When it comes to the bottom line, only you know the lifestyle that you and your family desire. Are you making enough to live the lifestyle of your dreams, or are only your employers living their dreams? Too many people work for the dreams of their employers instead of their own dreams. Maybe it is time for you to decide how much money you choose to make.

4 - Time with your family

Let’s face the truth here, if you have your priorities in proper alignment, your family should come before your job, so why are you spending more time at the job than with your family (sleep time does not count as family time)? A home based business should allow you to set your own hours and your own pay to honor those priorities. I have had friends tell me the awakening for them to start their own business was realizing their children did not even know who they were. Are your children being raised by low paid, low self esteem and negative child care workers? For young families, this is the number one reason they choose to work from home, to have the ability to raise and influence their own children. A powerful consideration is that you should be instilling in your children “your” values, not the values of minimum wage day care staff. Personally, my child is grown, but when he was very little, I realized that he was more influenced by the people who took care of him while I worked than he was by me. That is heartbreaking for a parent who wants the best for their child.

5 - Time to do the things you are passionate about

Community, church, school, whatever your passion, too often, working for someone else, does not allow you the time to get involved and make a real difference in outside projects. When you spend 8 to 14 hours per day at work (not to mention commuting time) you are left with little time for anything other than resting. By setting your own hours, in many cases, working 4 – 6 hours per day, you have the freedom to participate in outside projects. Take a look at your passions. Do you have time to nourish those passions. What about art, horseback riding, golf, skydiving and anything else that you can get excited about.

6 - Time to enjoy yourself

Just imagine how nice it would be to go to the beach on a Tuesday morning and spend the day, simply because the weather is gorgeous and the kids want to go. Could you do that with your job? Will your boss give you the freedom to decide what days you wish to work? Probably not, but by working from home, in an environment where you determine your hours, you can do that or anything else you enjoy, anytime you choose.

7 - Tax Benefits

Okay; I’m no expert. I believe in hiring accountants (who work from home) to do this type of thing for me. But, I do have a home based business and every year when I have my taxes calculated, I am amazed at how much money I save, simply because I use part of my home as my office and much of the expenses of my home are deductible. Each state will vary, so check with your tax experts or research online to determine just how much you can save. My husband and I earn 100% of our income, from our home. We actually saved more in taxes last year than I earned the final year of my 28 year management job. Because our business involves travel, we were even able to write off several luxury vacations and do so every year.

8 - Others are doing it, why can’t I?

This is so very true, there are many people who are operating very successful home based businesses and living the lifestyle they choose. Why not you? There are many opportunities available, so do your research. If others are achieving success and they will train you, that is an excellent starting point. It takes desire and commitment to have success but the easiest way to have this level of success is to join a company that allows you to be trained by the top producers. If the top producers are millionaires and teach you how to duplicate their success, then there is no reason why you can not have the same.

9 - Realizing your own dreams instead of working to accomplish your employer’s dreams

This is a huge reason for me personally. The average employee gives time, energy, thought, creativity, enthusiasm, support and on and on and on to their employer. Sometimes they are recognized or even rewarded, but in the end, who truly gains from this effort of the entire team? The employer, or the company. How many times have you worked extra hours or extra hard to accomplish a project and your employer came up to you and said, “Hey Joe, you worked so hard, I am going to let you choose your own salary”? Right, only the employer chooses his own salary and only the employer is being paid what he deserves. As an employee, you work for their dreams, never your own. How many times have you changed your dreams or your goals, simply because the company chose to pay you less, increase your hours or downsize you to another position? Some people are meant to be employees and be happy about their employer living their dreams and other people are meant to live their own dreams. It is your choice.

10 - Self respect and self accomplishment

There is nothing like the feeling of accomplishment when you step back and see the lifestyle you created for yourself and your family. Not only are you proud, but others see you as a mentor or a role model, “If Joe can do this, maybe I can too”. The pride that you feel when you accomplish a major task on the job is miniscule compared to the gratitude and respect you feel when you accomplish something for yourself and your family.

Some of these reasons may apply to you and others may not. I hope I have helped you to evaluate your needs and your desires. If these reasons describe you, then maybe it is time for you to take the leap of faith. If you choose to make the commitment to yourself and your family to live your dreams, look for people who are currently living the lifestyle you desire. Look for someone who is a good leader, someone who in your gut, you know they can show you how to have the same thing they have. If you realize through this that you do not have the passion to be self employed, that is fine, it is not for everyone. At least now, you have an idea of the level of passion held by those who are driven to succeed in a home based business.
